A Legacy Charted Over Six Decades
1961
The Chain Sets Sail
Allen Gary and George Early launch the Admiral Benbow Inn brand in Memphis, named after the inn in Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island.
1964
Jackson Opens
The Jackson outpost opens at 905 N State Street — 120 rooms, kidney-shaped pool, and stair towers painted like nautical flags. Architects: Haglund & Venable of Memphis.
1980s
New Owners
New ownership acquires the property and modernizes the rooms, keeping the landmark's distinctive mid-century International Style architecture intact.
1998
Admiral Retirement Center
The motel transforms into a senior living facility. An atrium roof is added over the central courtyard, preserving the historic shell.
2020
National Register
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 2020 — cementing the building's architectural legacy for generations.

The Admiral Apartments
Completely restored under Admiral LLC. The historic 1960s shell and original pool live on — now home to a modern luxury residential community.
